Edinburgh - Auld Reekie
Edinburgh is Scotland's charming capital city that flaunts both old and new. Everywhere you look in our hilly town, you’ll find incredible vistas and historic buildings dating back as far as the 1000s. It has all the medieval castles and winding cobblestone streets that inspired the Harry Potter universe. But this compact city - Scotland’s capital and second-largest - is also a modern playground with some of the best restaurants and cocktail bars in Europe.
Edinburgh is fondly known as “Auld Reekie”, which means “Old Smokey” in Scots.
The capital has a unique radiance when the rays of sun slip through the clouds and when the night falls, the ghosts that refuse to leave Edinburgh come out to haunt the streets and buildings, while guides take inquisitive tourists to see crypts, alleyways and graveyards in order to uncover the mysteries of "Auld Reekie."
As well as our well-known ghost stories, Edinburgh also offers its visitors and locals a wide variety of attractions, including museums, galleries, Edinburgh Zoo, the famous Edinburgh Castle and Palace of Holyrood House. Tourists can also visit a whisky distillery and learn how Scotland’s national drink is made in the famous Scotch Whisky Experience.
Edinburgh is known as one of Europe's most beautiful destinations for good reason. Whether you’re looking for a culture fix, family attractions, buzzing nightlife, rolling hills or delicious food, this city has it all.
